Louis A. Markos, Robert H. Ray Chair in Humanities at Houston Christian University.

Celebrating the 50th reunion of the Class of 1974, the C.S. Lewis Society, founded at Princeton in the 1970s, welcomes Louis A. Markos (Ph.D., U of Michigan), professor in English, Scholar in Residence, and Robert H. Ray Chair in Humanities at Houston Christian University, and holder of the Robert H. Ray Chair in Humanities. His 25 books include “Lewis Agonistes: How C.S. Lewis Can Train Us to Wrestle with the Modern and Postmodern World,” “On the Shoulders of Hobbits: The Road to Virtue in Tolkien and Lewis,” “Restoring Beauty: The Good, the True, and the Beautiful in the Writings of C.S. Lewis,” “From Achilles to Christ: Why Christians Should Read the Pagan Classics,” “From Plato to Christ: How Platonic Thought Shaped the Christian Faith,” “The Myth Made Fact: Reading Greek and Roman Mythology through Christian Eyes,” and “Apologetics for the 21st Century.” He has produced two lecture series with The Great Courses (one on Lewis’s life and writings); published 350 book chapters, essays, and reviews; and given well over 300 public lectures in some two dozen states as well as Rome, Oxford and British Columbia. He is committed to the concept of the professor as public educator and believes that knowledge must not be walled up in the Academy but must be disseminated to all who have ears to hear.

Markos will bring us a talk on the powerful connections between C.S. Lewis and Princeton University (including the connection with our own John Fleming). He will explore the question: Why and how does Lewis continue to provide such a dynamic inspiration for Princetonians?
